These collages were made by taking damaged books from the library and using the messed up pages. The pages were ripped, cut, burned, layered and glued together. Each of them representing a diagnostic criteria most commonly associated with 299.00 (F84.0) in the DSM-5. These include abnormalities with eye contact and body language to deficits in maintaining relationships and deficits in adjusting behavior to suit various social contexts. It’s about being human and connecting with others, using damaged books—still mostly fine but discarded for minor flaws. In repurposing pages to visually explore autism, I am creating something that can’t be said in words normally.
