My creation of this composite didn’t originate from an idea in my head but came from the picture that I took. It was inspired by the real world that was in front of me. My process for this specific piece started with experimentation and pointing my camera at anything that I found interesting or inspiring.

The Process

The base image was taken with a telephoto lens from the top floor of a parking garage at Grand Canyon University, a spot that I’ve been forced to park in many times, but also a spot that I enjoy looking out from at sunset. It became the location of my first photoshoot for this project.

From the top of the parking garage, I looked down onto the surrounding area. By using my camera telescope lens, I was able to capture specific areas and moments around me. This is what led me to taking a photo of the intersection, which became the subject of my project.

I edited the photo to my liking in Lightroom and Photoshop, adding and removing elements to create a better space to begin my project. But what has the potential to happen here, in my mind, to change the feeling of the landscape? That’s where I began my design thought process.

I also experimented by using different subjects in the compositions. Here is another version with a car as well as additional photography I took during my design process.

At the start, I enjoyed creating simple, metallic objects in Illustrator. What such item could I create and place into this image to bend reality? I played around with creating three-dimensional metallic stars as an experiment and ended up feeling that they were a great direction for the design to go in. How could I use them in the grungy photo of Phoenix to create something playful? It was almost as if I was placing them by hand into the image when I used Illustrator to make them and Photoshop to create shadows and blend them into the space.

I enjoyed experimenting with the creative process and letting my mind wander, being inspired by things that I have seen and taken pictures of. Exploring my surroundings has been the most fun and interesting way that I’ve gotten some of my ideas. My creative process was not strict. It was free-flowing and allowed me to be expressive, rather than following a strict creative process for an assignment.
